    • Your initial PR card, if it has expired or will soon expire. You may keep it until the new one arrives.

    • A clear copy of a valid travel document, such as your passport.
    • Photos that meet the specifications outlined in the guide.
    • Other identity documents as required.
    • Criminal records showing that you have no convictions.
  2. Provide additional documents, if needed:

    • A copy of the record of confirmation of permanent residence.
    • A copy of a valid ID, such as a driver’s license, student ID, or photo-identity card.

Documents required for PR Card Renewal

For PR card renewal, you typically need to provide the following documents:

  1. A copy of your current Permanent Resident (PR) card.
  2. Government-issued identity documents for verification.
  3. A copy of your valid driving license.
  4. If you obtained travel documents to re-enter Canada after your PR card expires, include a copy of these travel documents.
  5. A copy of your foreign passport or travel document if you don’t have a passport.
  6. Two application photographs that meet the PR card specifications (50mm x 70mm). Do not staple or use paper clips; instead, place the photos in an envelope and submit them with your application.
  7. Proof of meeting residency requirements, such as two years of residence in Canada over the last five years. If you do not meet these requirements, provide documentation showing:
    • You were outside Canada as the spouse or common-law partner of a Canadian citizen. Include your Canadian partner’s citizenship papers, proof of your relationship (e.g., marriage certificate or common-law proof), and evidence that your Canadian partner was with you throughout your absence.
    • You or your permanent resident spouse worked full-time for a Canadian company or business during your absence. Provide documents showing that the company has its head office in Canada and is operated from within Canada. Include proof of your relationship with your spouse, if applicable, and evidence that your spouse was with you during your absence.
  8. If you cannot provide proof of accompanying a Canadian citizen or working for a Canadian business while abroad, you may apply for renewal on Humanitarian & Compassionate (H&C) grounds, if applicable.

The processing time for PR card renewal typically takes about 90 days. You may receive your new PR card within 45 days. For accurate processing times, check the IRCC website. The process might extend up to 6 months depending on the volume of applications, and complex cases could take up to a year.
