What is the Federal Skilled Worker Program ?
The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program offers foreign professionals with experience in NOC 0, A, or B positions the opportunity to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents. Whether their work experience was gained inside or outside Canada, eligible candidates can apply if they meet specific criteria.
This program operates on a points-based system, where applicants are evaluated on factors such as age, education, work experience, job offers, language proficiency, and adaptability. To qualify, candidates must score at least 67 out of 100 points.
Once the point threshold is met, applicants can submit their profile for consideration through Express Entry, potentially receiving an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
Applicant Requirements for FSWP
- Language skills (English, French)
- Education completed 2 years of study in Canada for a PhD from a recognized Canadian institution.
- Work experience of uninterrupted full time of 12 months or equivalent part time in the past 10 years under occupation skill (Type O,A, B).
- Age under 50 years.
- Job offer as per Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) criteria from employer in Canada.
- Financial Support.
- Clear Medical and Criminal records.
To obtain 67 points out of 100 there are six selection factors below
Skilled work experience can earn up to 15 points
- Experience must be obtained in NOC 0, A, or B positions
- With at least one year of continuous work required in the primary occupation.
- The experience must be gained from full-time employment or two separate jobs that together add up to 30 hours per week.
- This work experience must be paid, excluding unpaid internships or volunteer work.
With education candidate can earn upto 25 points
- Required proof of secondary (high school) or post-secondary education (certificate, diploma or degree).
- Education can be acquired in Canada or abroad
Language Skills candidate can get earn up to 28 points
- Applicants will receive points based on their official test results for their first and second official languages.
- The languages considered for language proficiency are English and French.
- The tests will assess applicants' written, listening, speaking, and reading language skills.
Applicants can earn up to 12 points based on their age.
- Applicants under 18 years old and over 47 years old do not receive any points.
- The highest points are awarded to those aged 18-35.
Applicants can earn up to 10 points for adaptability
Adaptability is scored based on the applicant’s potential to settle and adapt to the country and culture. This assessment helps determine if applicants are likely to stay and live in Canada permanently.
Several factors contribute to an applicant’s score:
- The applicant's spouse or partner’s language level (earn up to 5 points).
- The applicant’s past studies in Canada (earn up to 5 points).
- Past work experience in Canada (earn up to 10 points).
- The applicant's spouse or common-law partner’s past work experience in Canada (earn up to 5 points).
- Arranged employment in Canada (earn up to 5 points).
- Having immediate relatives in Canada (earn up to 5 points).
Candidates can earn up to 10 points for arranged employment in Canada
- Candidates must have a valid full-time job offer to work in Canada.
- The job offer must fall under NOC categories 0, A, or B.
- Seasonal job offers do not qualify as valid job offers for this program.
- The job offer must be for at least one year.
- You may qualify for this program even if you are already in Canada under a current full-time contract, as long as the contract will be ongoing at the time of filing the application.
You must show proof of sufficient funds to support yourself and your family when settling in Canada, unless
- You are currently legally working in Canada.
- You have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer.

What is the process of applying FSWP
- Eligibility for the FSW program should be determined.
- All appropriate documentation and evidence, including education background (diplomas and transcripts), financial capacity (bank statements), language proficiency (test scores), a valid job offer, and any other necessary information, should be gathered.
- The profile must be filled out and submitted in IRCC’s Express Entry portal.
- The application process requires waiting for a response. If an invitation to apply for permanent residency is received, the application for permanent residency must be completed and submitted, with the hope of moving to Canada.
